Localization of high-power variable speed electric motors
With the localization of coiler and pinch-roll electric motors of Saba Steel Complex, which are among the most important rolling mill motors, while resolving the import requirements, 39 billion Rials were saved for each equipment.

Announcing this news and stating that this equipment was imported from Italy before localization, the head of rolling mill repairs of Saba Steel Complex added: ” Mobarakeh Steel experts decided to localize this equipment bearing in mind the high cost of import and the existence of sanctions.”
Mehdi Kardan on explaining the process of this project, said: “After evaluating the manufacturing companies and local suppliers, Roshd Sanat Niroo Company (RSN) was selected to localize the second rolling mill motors of Saba Steel Complex, including 640 kW mandrel motor and 300 kW pinch roll motor. Subsequently, the equipment was manufactured locally and tested as a spare part under continuous supervision of Mobarakeh Steel Complex specialists. Finally, after ensuring the necessary quality requirements and approval, it was installed and successfully operated.
He continued by emphasizing that the design and manufacturing of these electric motors has been performed for the first time in Iran keeping in mind that the mentioned electric motors are capable of producing up to 300% of the nominal torque while due to the safety requirements in the rolling mill lines, operate at low voltage despite their high power.
He mentioned: “Following this success, we can boldly declare that Iran has now acquired the technical knowledge to manufacture a variety of motors with variable speed requirements of rolling mills and other similar industries, and the import issue of this very important equipment is resolved.”
In this regard, Mohammad Reza Ahmadi, electrical and automation specialist of Saba Steel Complex stated: In order to support domestic production and implementing of the country’s resistance economy, several meetings were held between Rolling mill Repair Unit specialists and their Technical Office specialists, the Localization and Purchase unit, during of which the necessary technical information was reviewed and prepared. After evaluating the domestic manufacturing companies, the order was finally given to RSN.
In this regard, Kamran Nosuhi, the electric foreman of the unit, added: “The features of these motors include variable speed, high torque, operation at low speeds and water-cooled system.” In addition, according to the warranty of these motors by the manufacturer, in case of any problems or malfunctions, the relevant experts will be present as soon as possible to provide advice and other necessary measures in the hot rolling mill line of Saba Steel Complex.
Furthermore, Seyed Hojjatollah Mousavi, a spare parts expert of technical office of repairs, also said: “These two motors were ordered for the expansion of Saba Steel Complex and were supposed to be procured from a foreign manufacturer with a long-term lead time and cost more than 230,000 Euros, considering the sanction situations.” Therefore, it was a privilege to localize these equipment in cooperation with domestic manufacturing companies.
He pointed out: with the localization of this equipment, in addition to saving about 39 billion rials, there will be no more worries in terms of supplying motor spare parts in sanction circumstances.
